Polish Finishing

Using Lubricite with French Polish Finishing

What is Lubricite?

Lubricite is our time-tested padding lacquer that brings out the beauty of wood and leather using the French polish technique. This finishing material surpasses all other finishes when using the timeless hand-polishing technique of French polishing.

Lubricite’s proprietary formula is a shellac-based padding lacquer. We formulate specifically for the French polishing technique, since that allows for the best quality finish. When you order Lubricite, it is ready to use directly from the bottle. There is no need to add shellac flakes, alcohol or oils. This formula has a low odor and offer quick drying, which makes it simple and easy to use.

Perfect For Use With Wood

Lubricite is perfect to use on wood. When you use Lubricite, it will pad our any imperfections, build the finish where needed, and its color pads perfectly with alcohol stains. You can easily apply it to both new and old leather. And if you want to use it over an existing finish, you can. However, where Lubricite really shines is when you apply it to wood. You can apply it over both raw and stained wood. When you want to apply it on wood, we highly recommend using the French polish hand rubbing technique for the best results. We also recommend using a pad.

How Do You French Polish?

So you know what Lubricite is, but do you know what it means to French polish? Well, French polishing is the name of the process of coating wood with a solution (like Lubricite!) using a “rubber” made of rag and cotton wool instead of with a brush. This solution needs to have shellac dissolved in alcohol, which of course Lubricite does. How it works then is the alcohol evaporates, which only leaves the shellac deposit on the wood. When you do this application correctly, the finish is unlike anything else you will see. But you only get this finish by using your hand and not some sort of tool. Due to this, if you are new to this sort of finishing, we recommend practicing the application method before moving onto what you actually want to finish. This way the end result will meet your expectations.

Materials Required For French Polish

Here is a list of some of the most notable materials you need to effectively perform the French polishing technique.

  • French Polish
  • White Cotton or Linen Rag
  • Unmedicated Cotton Wool (Cotton Waste)
  • Linseed Oil
  • Methylated Spirits (Denatured Alcohol)
  • Screw top glass jar
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Fine Abrasive Paper

Those are the basics. But not all polishing jobs are looking for the same end result. Here are some scenarios that require some more specific supplies.

  • For open grained woods you will need a grain filler.
  • If you want to change the color you will need wood dye.
  • For those looking to remove old finishes, you will need paint and varnish remover.
  • If you are looking to remove stains or lighten the wood you will need wood bleach.
  • And if you need to fill cracks and screw holes, you will need wood stopping.
